New 383 runs great but won't idle - what to do?
I got my new 383 running today - started the break in procedure - sounds GREAT and revs smooth.....but it barely idles at 400-500 RPM and stalls unless I baby the throttle.
I rebuilt with a larger cam (Comp Cams 576/570, 230/236, 113 lsa) and went down to about 9.25.1 compression from my stock 350.
No check engine lights or anything.
Is this normal and should I have to retune just to get it to idle or do I have another problem somewhere that I need to chase down?

Tune for sure is needed... get the idle around 900rpm and see if there are still problems.
Also, check your IAC values... if they are maxed at 160 at idle, you'll need to open the TB blade a bit (mechanically with the screw). I also had issues with idle if I was experience a miss... but it would be less noticeable at higher RPM, especially with the lumpy cam.
Try revving the motor from idle... if there is any hesitation before it revs up, you may have a slight miss, an arching plug wire boot, or the like. Try it at night in the dark... and you'll see the arch if there is one.
