Default Power window question

well when i first got my car i could hold down the window switch for like a couple seconds and then let off and the window would roll all the way down by itself...for some reason now it has stopped... is there a relay or something that is controlling this? and if so, where is it located, and what do i need to get in order to get it to work again?
thanks

try holding the up button for a couple seconds with the window already up then quickly switch it to the down button until the window goes all the way down and continue to hold it for 3-5 seconds then let it go, then roll the window all the way up and see if the automatic works... this is how most auto-down switches are reset

The unit that controls the express down is located under the driver's side kickplate ( panel with the hood release ).

could be the relay behind the kick panel, but it could also be the window motor going out. The relay cuts power when it senses high resistance in the circuit. High resistance from a dying motor will trigger the relay.

mind you, this is all because of the window motor's thermal diode that does the same thing inside the motor but as it ages it increases resistance causing resistance to increase and the motor to stop prematurely.

If the window is slower than usual I got money on the motor diode dying out. If the window is the same speed as its always been... it's likely the relay.

ya it hasnt really varied in speed any, and its not that slow, especially compared to some of my friends's windows in their f-bodies... so im guessing its the relay...
so are you saying it is in the knee bolster panel deal like under the steering wheel, or is it to the left of that where the hood release is?
also, where do i find one of those relays? just at autozone or ebay or what? like what exactly am i looking for?

where the dead-pedal is (the brace for your left foot when it's not on the clutch ).

take the top plastic trim piece off by removing the screws along the long skinny floor piece (thew plastic piece is used to pinch down the carpet against the door opening), then remove the screw that hold the dead-pedal down.

It's a black box about 4" x 6" x 2" thick.

Only GM will have a direct replacement. Used ones are available from wrecker yards. DFI makes a similar unit for their car alarms that include some additional features you can look into if you want (like express UP as well as DOWN... many guys use this unit for setting up the passenger window with the same express feature).
