Default LT1 for daily driver?

Im selling my truck and want to pick up a cheap daily driver. I want something kinda quick, and easy to maintain, with alriight gas mileage. I was looking at Regal GS's and I thought to myself...why not an F-body??

LT1's seem to be getting cheaper and cheaper, even LS1's for that matter, but those are alittle out of my price range...(I am going to pay cash)

I would want a 6spd, for the highway mileage, because 90% of my driving is done on the highway, I am just worried about insurance and the Michigan winters. I drove a 2wd s10 for 3 years and it wasnt too bad...

Is this a good idea or what lol? I didnt know which part of the forum to post this, hopes its the right place. I never really looked into LT1's before...always LS1's etc, even built a 460hp LSx thats going into a s10.

Thanks

I drive my car everyday at the moment. My A4 gets 25 MPG on the highway. I hate my car in the winter though. I put cat litter in the t-top bay for weight, and that really helped. My car has only seen the salt like 2 times since the resto, and I really hate having to drive it. I did put some 225/60/16 tires on the back which does make a difference in traction because they are narrower.

Mine's my daily driver. It does better in the snow that I thought it would. I have the worst driving record you could think of at 19 and still being able to drive, and my insurance is $105/month for liability through Progressive, which is pretty damn good for all I've done. Gas mileage isn't too bad. Even with letting my car sit and idle a lot to warm up and mostly town driving with a decent amount of WOT time, I still get around 15 mpg. Once it warms up and I don't have to worry about warming up the car as long, I should see around 20 mpg with normal town driving, I hope. I say go for it.

i daily drive mine also, and as long as you are careful and pay attention to your surroundings and anticipate what could happen you will be fine
my car is a hell of a lot easier to drive in the winter than my two wheel drive full size truck was in the winter for sure
just realize that you are driving a more powerful than normal car and that hitting the gas too fast, even if you are only pushing in about a quarter throttle, you can still slide and lose control
so as long as you are careful and understand the power to weight on a slick surface, you will be fine

i say put ur money towards a vehicle that will keep you more safe and get you around alot better. ive driven f-bodies in the snow, and its not fun. ill stick to my AWD 02 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited for winter weather.

Awesome. And worst case scenario as far as weather, I could just buy a cheap s10 4x4 or an older gm 1500 4x4 for < $1000 to drive in the winter.

I would rather drive my LT1 in the rain and snow than my old 3.4 V6. That old open differential on 215's would slip a WHOLE lot more than my Trans Am. However, I don't see enough snow to matter. Maybe a flurry or two.

I daily drive mine...but I absolutely hate it. Winter time sucks ***. I wouldn't recommend one for a daily. A daily driver is a car for taking a beating and getting good gas mileage. Not for F-Bodies. Summer is okay, but winter is harsh.

Im going to make sure I have an extra vehicle next winter... maybe a Subaru or AWD DSM. Then I can have fun in the winter too

Live in the mountains in PA......daily drive my TA....they're not that bad at all in the snow. Just gotta be smart and give up the desire to use the horses under the hood. I put 215/60's snow tires on(studded for ice) and i havent had a problem anywhere. It's just another car with rwd....Deff go with the 6-speed you'll regret it if ya dont......but thats just my opinion. Good luck in your car hunt....and remember, THESE ARE ALL JUST OPINIONS. It's your personal choice.

I loved daily driving my LT1 formula and kind of wish it was still just a stock car or maybe a few boltons. It was really reliable, had plenty of power, and got about 16-18 mpg with more city than highway.
You CAN drive RWD in the snow. as said before, some weight in the back and snow tires makes a HUGE difference.
I have honestly thought about picking another f-body up to daily drive, probably a 6 speed this time around and move the formula more towards a drag car.

edit: LT1 f-bodies are CHEAP now. a friend just picked up a 94 trans am for $3,000. paint was a little rough but it was mechanically sound.

If I still lived up North I would buy a used Subaru for the winter time I think. I wouldn't want to deal with the salt, but then again if the paint already looks bad I guess I wouldn't feel guilty about it, and dragging all that winter garbage into the interior.

i drove around my dads bone stock 30th SS for a semester and got VERY VERY good gas mileage. granted it is an M6, but i got well over 22 mpg highway and atleast 17-19 city. Bone stock M6 lt1's get very reasonable gas mileage. im getting the 97 SS A4 this weekend so we'll see how an A4 compares to the M6.

I got rid of my '99 Grand Cherokee for my WS6. I live in TX/FL tho. If I lived in MI I don't think I'd do it. Also have the '95 'camaro for the real fun.

lol, thanks for your guys opinions! I know its not practical at all, but I'm not practical at all . LSx F-bodys seem to get better mileage on the highway then the LTx's, but they are pretty similar.

Mine is a DD and I dont mind it at all, it doesnt get great in town mileage, but on the highway its alright. It rarely snows here enough to make a difference. However I did get caught here last year with the regular tires on it and this thing was completely unable to move around in the snow. It was like a wet heavy snow and only about 1.5" of it on the streets, and I serously couldnt even get a block. Luckily, around here we dont see any snow on the streets but once a year or so.

I daily drove mine, and I got the same as everyone else 17-19 in town (not flooring it everywhere) and 22ish on the highway. Don't drive it in the snow, and please don't drive fast in the rain-I've learned from both.
