Default lt1 mods for a buddy

could you guys gimme some advice for a buddy what to do to pep up his 96 4 door caprice ex-cop car. he has ignition & exhaust already done. he wants it to be streetable, but take it to the 1/4 mile track. its an auto. other than rear gears, would you recommend the hot cam, or something else. He 's on a strict budget. I know h/c/i would be best but he doesn't have funds for it. What is best for less cash- a cam ony with a homemade port job on throttle body?
Thanks for the advice in advance

The cars need a LOT of mods before thinking of a cam, and the springs in the HOT kit besides not being good enough do not fit the iron heads.

A home port on the TB would be completely pointless.

Ignition mods were wasted money.

When you say the exhaust is done, what is done?

CAI done?

Gears and posi are great mods, roller rockers and fresh spring wake these up at higher rpms too, a stall is good once you have the other things done, then you can think about a cam and I would think about something other than the HOT.

3.73s and an Eaton are the most common posi and gears choices.

From your other post I see you are near Chicago, early april I should be at GLD with a few freiends with modded b-bodies, would be the best research you can do. Let us help you learn from our mistakes, things are cheaper that way.

You will be suprized at how basic the setup of this car is.
My favorite video from GLD last fall.

My friend with the video camera can never go when the weather is right so no 11.9 videos and no wheel off the ground videos, maybe this year though.

Never had nitrous. It is NA stock shortblock and that track is just about 150miles from my driveway. Nothing exotic just a well thought out combination. I am leaving something on the table by keeping it truely street comfortable, trapping at just 56-5700 due to street friendly gears and the relatively low stall.

Seeing it in person will tell the whole story, it is not a race car. Hopefully I find time and money to do a down and dirty paintjob on the nose this spring, the missmatch is from a deer impact at 5:15am one morning, like I said I drive it, 8K miles or so a year.

sweet. you definitely have a sweet setup. Im in Chicago, 150miles from gld, you cant be too far- southside maybe? I spoke with my bud and he has 373 gears with a posi. so what h/c/i would you suggest? Do you like the lt4 topend kit at all? Thanks again for all the info.

I am up near Green Bay.

The LT4 setup is a bad choice every last piece of it.

Advanced Induction is who ported the LT1 aluminum heads on my car and spec'd the cam. The heads are actually obsolete they came out with better stuff shortly after I bought.
Intake is just a LT1 intake I had them port to match the heads.

I didn't talk to the kid, I had asked the staging lane guy to make the race happen and I know he enjoyed it.
An hour later I decided to try and make one last pass on street tires before heading home and line up against a newer Mustang with drag wheels and skinnies and all, figure well the Furds will have their revenge.
I got carried away trying to launch and had to pedal it badly, I ran 13.1 and beat the new Mustang too. I have gone as fast as 12.7 on street tires but that was on my old Bridgestones, they seemed to handle the cold better than the current Kuhmos Ecsta SPT both were 255/50/17.

Home port job on the TB is not worthless. A well thought out port and some smoothing will net a few ponies and help throttle response.

Sorry man, wasn't trying to be a dick. You said NC, I did a search, that one is in Concord, two hours north of me. Looked like the one you were looking for to me. Again, sorry, didn't mean to come across as an ***.
