Default 383/396

For you stroker guys, what would be the better option? I personally want a 396, but I am sure there is a reason why not poeple have one and go with a 383. Right now I am trying to stay under $4000 but have a feeling that won't happen. Oh, and the motor pretty much took a **** going down the highway the other day, so this is semi-critical to get done in the next month or two. TIA

With a budget like that your best bet is a junkyard shortblock and ported heads. Displacement does not work without the topend to support it and the stock shortblock can support a LOT more than a stock topend.

I am working on heads at the moment. I know it will be more than 4k, but that is what I have available at the moment. I haven't decided what I want to do for heads, I am hearing bad things about afr's lately and have started looking around again.

I see that you have 383, 396 and 'bigger'.

You could build a decent 383 for a budget. But if you dont have the supporting parts then your just wasting money. Your heads and camshaft selection make the power, more so then the cubic inches.

And 'bigger', well lets just say if you want a crank thats more then a 3.875 stroke then you better have at least $3k alone for that. I almost went with a 401ci setup, but the 3ci wasnt worth the coin.

Tony.

Don't a 396 require a small base cam? which will cost more. I can't remember if it does.

there's no replacement for displacement. I would go as big as your realistic means can allow.

What exactly are you going to do with the car? DD, track only, etc...

95camZ Uh, YEAH!!!!! lol I don't have all the money for it yet. Waiting on tax return, but would definately look into it if not gone by then.

Solid95z-DD since we don't have a track out here right now. Plan is to one day to a big single turbo setup, but that is awhile down the road.

SD-I didn't realize you had to work the block to go bigger. Guess that is out of the question now.

I have seen alot of these setups and Ed Wright is from very close to my home town so I know his reputation, but I have noticed these guys have a more track dedicated setup than I want. I am looking for a solid 450/450 if possible. That will keep me content for about a week.

I agree with Dwayne

I'd rather have a bad azz 350-355 than a mediocre 396

If you have the money for the heads/cam and support mods with cash left over for a stroker go for it.

now if you only have money for heads/cam or stroker

Go with the bad azz 355

Cam95Z pointedto a bad azz deal on a 383 shortblock. All I would need to do is find some good heads for it. Hopefully I can get my tax return in before it gets sold.

And Cam, I PM'd him yesterday. I want to know shipping cost out to hawaii. Everything is carzy ****** expensive to ship out here.

remember the bigger you go, the better flowing heads you have to have, which equals spending more money, you dont want a huge cubed bottom end with a top end thats going to choke it out

Oh!!Yea!! If you do end up getting the setup from him, you can send the heads to AI(advanced induction) and have them do the machine work and send them back!! They do really good work!! Well good luck getting a setup that works for you and be sure to post once you decided for sure what you are going with and then how it works for you!!
