if someone ever makes an aluminum head in the form of the iron LT1 casting, we would see some serious bolt-on h/c numbers.

There is no point. If you are going through all the trouble of lifting the heads, you might as well port the stockers.

EDIT I take that back, there IS a twin turbo purple T/A from Thunder than runs in the 8's...so thats THREE I have heard of.

how do you figure? Iron LT1 heads are proven to be a better design as far as flow goes. Being made of iron limits the compression ratio you can use because of heat soak. Make them in aluminum and youre going to have a better head than a stocker, ported or not.

This makes no sense to me. Why would this make ANY difference? If it was so much better, why arent the iron heads off Impalas being sought after for stock eliminator classes?


And why do Impala guys chunk them in favor of aluminum castings?

i just explained this in my last post. heat soak & its relation to comp ratio.

The iron head is the better design (its actually a reverse cooled version of the vortec head)... but its iron!

This is news to me. I wasn't aware the the LT1 heads flow better than the aluminum heads. I thought Iron heads were easier to get more HP out WHEN they are ported. I don't think there is a design difference between the two, just material.

there is approximately a 9% difference in flow. like i said, they are reverse-cooled versions of the vortec heads used on 96-98 gm trucks, which are some of the best flowing sbc heads ever made.

Stock eliminator cars have no ISSUE with "heat soak" They go from the trailer to the staging lane, make a pass and back to the trailer.

Also, from that link you posted, it looks like there is very little difference between them, not 9% better flow, more like less than 3%. It also shows that ported aluminum heads flow significantly more than the Iron heads.

Purchasing a head like you described is almost not worth it, might as well port the stockers.

weight difference and iron requires less compression ratio. They end up about even.

because we all drive stock eliminator cars here There is a difference in compression ratios you can use, do some searching on this topic please. Im not an expert on it, but ive read this stuff many times more than once.

i never claimed a stock iron head would outflow a ported aluminum head. That isnt comparing apples to apples, you can port the iron heads too (and if not more). I also never claimed it would be worth it. I claimed it would be worth it if an aluminum version of the iron head was made by someone.

The 9% figure is what Injuneer calculated. (225 CFM cs 206 CFM) I didnt come up with that myself... i just trusted the guy with 30k posts in LT1 tech on cz28

The point I was trying to make is, even to buy a new head in aluminum, with all the work involved, why wouldn't you port the stockers? There is so little difference.

I dont expect it to ever happen for that reason. I was merely illustrating that our engines have more potential we have not tapped yet. Everyone loves the LS1 because they have better heads... and we know for a fact that better LT1 heads COULD exist if someone made them.

that is all i am saying.

pretty sure i didnt.

in terms of flow:
stock iron > stock aluminum
ported iron > ported aluminum

Since its only a 9% difference at most, its pretty obvious that
ported aluminum > stock iron

There are better heads out there, they are made by trickflow, edlebrock, AFR, but they cost money.

I understand what you were getting at, and it goes along with my arguement. For a bolt on car, LS1's are hard to beat. If you are dropping major coin, the playing field gets evened out.
