Default Needing some input on cat delete

I have a 94 Trans Am that came with a cat delete and the I pipe just fell out of it and I had to take it to the shop because I have no tools here at school. Shop said they can only fix it if they put a cat on it. I hated the idea but had to do it. The car is quieter obviously and with the headers and hooker exhaust set up, I think I want to take the cat off and maybe sell it. It is a pretty large cat that usually would go on a truck, but since it had the most flow allowance out of the stock cats they had at the shop, the guy put it on for me. It is a brand new walker catback system. I was wondering if anyone thinks I should delete the cat again to get her puring or stick with the cat? I think I could sell the cat to a scrapper or someone on the forum since it is brand new. Any suggestions?

Also, I have a small exhaust leak at the collectors just towards the end of the drivers side header. Guy said it would 160 to fix total. Sounds scam-like. Sometimes when I get on the gas hard I hear almost like a raspy or backfire sound coming from what I think is the headers. Would this leak have anything to do with it?

I'd find a different shop. Shops aren't legally allowed to remove cats, but i've never heard of them not being allowed to work on vehicles without them, guess they can't work on pre-cat vehicles?....b.s.

If the vehicle was equipped with a cat from the factory then a shop cannot legally remove the cat or do exhaust work on a car that the cat has been removed from. If they get caught its a pretty hefty fine.

also.. what do you think about the exhaust leak by the collectors towards the end of the headers? could that be causing that pop/rasp sound down there?

Some smaller shops will do it. I could have had it done by a shop near where I live, but the guy talked me out of it because he said from experience a cat delete versus bigger bore, higher flow cats only showed about a 1 whp increase for cat deletes. But, I suppose if you were running a full blown race car that really needed high exhaust flow, a straight pipe would be more beneficial. Plus, if you live in an emissions testing area, you are no longer required to test OBD 1 cars.

I believe its all situational here. If you prefered the loud sound beforehand versus after, then don't let a salesman talk you into something else. Emissions is a big deal in most areas. But you have to know the regulations for the area you are in, particularly where you have the vehicle registered. I currently live in a emissions tested area in Maryland (very strict). But my car is registered in Arkansas (no emissions testing). I hope this points you in the right direction. Be smart about it though. Use your resources. Talk to different people in your area or get online to find that needed information to help make your decision. Good luck!

LIL BLACK Z28, i have hooker exhaust, and i love it. not sure what headers are on the car but exhaust sounds mean as hell. I highly suggest it. Cant lose with Borla either.

What do you guys think about that exhaust leak at the manifold? i have some sealant I can put on it, but they want to charge me 160 to fix it cause they say its hard to get to.... dunno if i buy that. so do you guys think that rasp or popping noise could be coming from that leak?

I dont have headers just manifolds.I like the sound of the flowmaster and loudness. Will a hooker exhaust give me close to the same sound and loudness.

yea i really think it will. mine sounds really good, granted my trans am is cammed and has headers, but ive heard other hooker systems without headers and cam and it sounds mean as hell. I think the 80 series flowmaster system is shitty on LT1s and LS1s. It sounds too airy and not as much deepness and loudness.
