Default 6-speed vs auto

Alright, got a question for all yall. I live about 2 hours from the nearest track, car does not see any track time. I have the ol stock 4l60e, thinking of going to a 6-speed when i have the chance.

The only problem is that it going to cost around $2000 dollas to do the swap, do yall think that it would be worth it for the fun factor? Like i said, not worried about track times, but will be installing le2 cam and heads soon, and would really enjoy 400hp through a 6 speed.

Quick! Put the lid back on the can of worms and step back LOL

"Worth it" is very subjective.
Is it worth it to me? ... no
Is it worth it to Bob? ... probably
Is it worth it to you? ... you'll have to answer that one.

A 6-speed is a blast on the street, so is a stalled auto.
It's a matter of preference.
If you're just looking to put up big dyno numbers with this mod, either a
tighter STR converter or a stick with a good clutch will accomplish that.

You will find bias answers from both corners. I mean, I won't even CONSIDER an automatic, I hate driving them. Naturally I will tell you M6 is the ONLY way to really enjoy the car.

I would only perform this swap if either I could do it cheaply, OR I liked the car enough to where I wouldn't ever really plan on selling it. How far are you in to just off it and get a 6spd vert? If you love it enough to do the swap, do it.

But don't ask for an opinion on worth, cause ours really won't be worth anything. IF you want to spend the $ and will enjoy it, go for it.

I have a 4l60e auto and had a custom rebuild into a race tranny w/ a 3200 stall and a corvette shift kit. I payed 1500 for the job. It's badass and smokes 6spd in the 1/4 mile..but if you don't wanna race that don't matter. Keep in mind if you change to a 6spd you will want to change your gear ratio out too.

i would say an auto for the track but an m for DD'ing. M6's can improve your gas mileage on the street and are fun on the street. But a stall will help you at the track and hurt your mpg's. there are your pro and cons.

When it comes to sheer driving enjoyment, 6-speeds are known to bend automatics over for bouts of violent, non-consensual sex.

I've been pondering the swap..

The biggest thing I have come down to is the driveability. I can bust it loose very quickly on the street with the Auto..it would be even quicker with the 6spd. I'm at a different power level..but still the Auto makes it alot more street friendly.

If you get a custom A4 Tran built with the right stall and 373 it's lights out for M6 and u can rally with no room for error during shifts

I've been thinking about it too, I really miss driving a stick, I just sit in way to much traffic to do it. I haven't driven a stick in like 7 or 8 months and my left leg is still bigger than my right, id say do it...

Oh how I love the M6's...But for what I need, the stalled A4 was a cherry on top. For this car, I wouldn't have done it any differently. Although I feel the car more with an M6, put that 2k towards something more meaningful.

It's definitely a topic of personal opinion. All I can say is that I love both, and there are times that I just want to row gears until the shifter falls off. That being said, if I could only have one then I'de take an auto.

actually i drive both and a proper auto will spin easier than a 6 speed...the auto make loads more tq spike that will break the tires loose

and another thing to consider....autos when they spin and go crazy all you have to do is steer....if you get outa control you dont have to put it in neutral and push in the clutch ect...6 speeds make things more cimplicated and are a lot more dangerous imo

i've already got the 3.73 gears, and a small stall. I live in a town with a very small population (no traffic), and do a lot of interstate traveling (30 miles each way to work every day). Like i said, the car never see's the track so thats not an issue, as far traction, i've made plenty of mistakes in my a4, hopefully enough to not do stupid **** in the future, with or without the m6. Thanks for all the replies, i think i will do the 6speed swap.

O yeah, i have had the car for 6 years, i would really hate to part with it just cause its not a 6 speed.

2 grand would make a nice down payment on a car that's already a 6-speed.
