Thanks MADMAN!!! Long story short...
I didn't realize that the shaft coming out of the steering column could be pushed in but somehow the the '97 column I put in the car only had about 2.5 inches protruding when there should have been 4 - 4.5 inches. As a result, I couldn't get any steering couplers to fit!! Everything was too short. I tried both LT1 and LS1 couplers.
MADMAN was kind enough to explain over the phone what the problem was and today I was finally able to get the coupler on after about 2 weeks of agonizing troubleshooting. As he suggested, I pulled the column and tapped the shaft back to length using a hammer. Won't be long now this puppy is on the road!!
