Actually, both styles of engines love compression. There ARE problems with it that way, but remember if you can keep the fuel and air withing stoch (and with enough octane) you will gain a ton more power with higher compression. However, with lower compression, you should still have the quench pad looked into. The tighter the pad, the less chance there is for there to be spark knock.
On a different note, 4.3 V8? Externally the same as the LT1? That means it has an optispark?
