383..vs..396 Before you bring it up yes I did a search, the most specific was an older '05 thread.
The time has finally come. I didn't want to spray at this time or go 355 so that is ruled out (I know it's a good option though.)The stroke length of the 396 seems to definitely yield more torque, now what setups are you guys running and which should I go with? What prices am I looking at? I have a very healthy H/C A4 car on a 350 putting down just under 400, and it's going to be put back together in the next few weeks. Please let me know what to expect!

everyone goes with a 383 and in most cases a 355 CI well built well put out the same HP numbers with out the the nice torque curve but it all depends on cam profile and head flow. in most cases 396 engines are so big in the displacement that everything get tight and there little room for error.... in this case running a blower or nitrous set up gets a little hairy. also a 396 will not give u the rev unless u a running a huge head and a perfect choosen cam profile. price gets a little higher because of the custom pistons. i am doing a 396 set up but i love all motor. No suprise here, after searching all the bigger sites ie summit, jegs, thunder..the kits are all for 383's only. Course you can build your own 396 but looks like a lot of people just buy into the full rotating assembly kits.

The motor are about the same to build. Just that the cheaper companies only make a 383 kit. So you have to step up the price for the better quality of the better companies, say callies where i got my 396, a 383 set up is about the same price, unless you go cheap and reuse your rods and ya pistons are more plentiful off the self. So your limited to a 383 or 355 the cheaper you go.
