Alternatives to the optispark..
Well there is the LTCC and the Delteq. They really don't take care of the problem of the optispark sensor being underneath the water pump. Its hit or miss with the Optispark, Pre 95 optisparks are the nonvented design and are supposedly more prone to failure because of they don't have airflow to help remove moisture or ozone if it builds up in the cap and rotor.
It's hit or miss,vented or non-vented. I've owned my '94Z28
since 1994 new,non-vented opti. 2005 I did h/c/i and replace the original opti(working),w/new non-vented since the motor was taken apart. So again, it's hit or miss.

Opti has served me well and I have put 180+k on my cars bought used.
Most of the opti "problems" are neglect or incompetent wrenches behind them.

Opti's can be very reliable if everything is set up properly. If you take the voltage out of them they supposedly can last a very long time. As fas as getting rid of it, there have only been a few options in the past and I don't think any of them actually went anywhere. Electromotive comes to mind.
