Default Please explain "tuned" to me.

Ok, like i mentioned before, i am new to these computerized cars, i hear this tuned said alot, is this a chassis tune? if so, what do they normally cost, i figured i would start another post for this & other ??s i have. i got to looking over my 97 6sp. today & noticed other mods done to it, when i bought the car, i got a stack of Summit receipts, this guy stuck some $$ in this car, i just don't understand why it won't hit 100 MPH or better at the track in the 1/4, here are the mods that have been done, will it benefit me getting it tuned? Is there HP too be found from one of these?

CAI: K&N
MAF: Unknown, i'm thinking its a Granatelli
JET Air Foil/charger
Catbacks with HF cats, 3" main pipe
Ultraflow muffler
Hypertech Programmer (i've not heard good things on this)
Underdrive Pulleys

Ram Clutch Kit
B&M short throw shifter
Panhand Rod
Eddy Torque arm: I was surprized to find this on it.
Greasable lower control arms
KWB Struts & shocks
HP brake up-grade with drilled rotors & braided lines.

I know why my ETs were down (14.5s) do to a bad 2.599 60ft, but shouldn't this LT1 be seeing 100+ with these mods? I only got 97 MPH.

I'm looking at getting an Elbow, LT Headers & more exhaust work, maybe a true dual or cut outs.

Well because I'm tired, I'll just answer the subject question: Tune means that you get your car's computer tuned to what you have done to it. Also, you can tune a stock car and just wake it up a bit since the original one is more conservative. Tunes are needed for automatic cars if you change some things, but generally for power adders and anything the helps with air-flow like intakes and exhaust. So if you plan to do a ton of things, then go and do them first, and get a tune after so you don't have to re-tune later.

Second Q: Quick answer, you should be running faster, but there are many variables into that, the airs D/A (don't know what that means but bsaically how thick the air is apposed to seal level), how the track is, and how well you can drive. I'd say you should be into the mid 13s.

Get rid of the hypertech and granatelli.

You can get a computer that's tuned for your specific mods mailed to you. All you do is fill out a form and pay them (pcmforless.com or madz28.com). They custom tune it and it optimizes the fueling and such for your car, but it's not EXACT. You can also get a dyno tune which is much more expensive, but usually dead on with nothing left on the table.

Dyno tune: $400-500
Mail tune: $150-175

Also if your car is an automatic, then that trap speed is about normal. If it's a manual the two things I said to remove will probably help along with a mail tune.

New to computers.........welcome to the darkside lol. All in all it is much easier than dealing with a carb for A/F ratio. You can get an exact mixture for premium results via computer controlled electronics. Understanding them is another thing
Each piece is designed to be a backup to the other, they collect data from several points and monitor and reproportion in accordance to the command of your right foot.As said a stock car can even benefit from a tune.A tune redefines the parameters set at the factory. A tune is needed anytime a major modification to the engine is doen that affects air flow and fuel mixture, also (more so if you have an auto as it is also electronically controlled) gears and a stall.
I could literally type several pages one each component and tell you how they work, why they work that way and how they work with each other. Once you begin to work with the vehicle the way it acts and what components are involved will become second nature.

Its a stick car, so thats why i felt it should MPH alittle better, i really love these camaros, there a blast to drive, i'm a Mopar nut at heart, had a 10 sec. duster, just new to these computer cars. I've even noticed that it doesn't fire right up like it should (turns over fine) just doesn't bust off normally, takes it a bit most of the time, so i'm thinking its in the air/fuel mix, i'll bet that Hypertech or MAF has something to do with it, the mail tune is all i would be able to afford right now, i'll call one of them & check it out more.
