Would this cause a oil leak

I was taking all the **** of to change my opti and I found that on the waterpump spindle gear that the little o-ring has popped out. Not the whole thing, just like 1/4 of it. I had a slight oil leak, and it doesnt look like a intake gasket. Could this be the reason?

That o-ring prevents dirt from getting onto the splines of the water pump shaft. Ist always a good idea to lube the water pump shaft and the splines that stick out the timing cover with a good grease. I have seen the splines ware out because of this. If you have a leak in that area it maybe the seals that prevent oil from leaking out the timing cover. Its got 2 seals. One seal is for the water pump shaft and the other seal is for distributor.

So if the o ring prevents dirt from getting to the splines, it wouldnt cause a oil leak. It would be a good idea to change the timing cover gasket then?

when i did mine and took my balencer off that's where my car leaked from - it's always good to replace the seal on your opti and the seal on your balancer. . .
