Can a built tranny kill power?
No..properly built Tranny will help you.
My first Tranny that I had with my 402 was "Built" to handle it.. it actually was slipping every Gear. After I killed the Sprag, Sunshell, Reverse Drum, 3 & 4 Clutch Packs, 2nd Gear Band, and a few others in one pass at the Track I had it re-built with something actually built to handle it. There is a BIG difference..it pulls alot harder.

Yea, a built trans vs a stock is night and day. I REALLY miss my built 700R4 in my 91. I wish I pulled it
I'd sometimes chirp 3rd @ 85~mph
Other day I was going through one put together with good parts but by a bad local builder and was talking to my tranny parts guy and the list got so long of hardparts failures he told me to just buy another core. Car it was in had less power than mine and managed to kill the tranny repeatedly just a few hundred miles each time.
The band, drum overrun circuit as a whole, 3-4 clutches, sprag is a total loss, has the wrong planetary set in it and other parts I forget the names of at the moment. Point being lots of bad builders out there, choose carefully, local is good IF you can find a customer of theirs with the same tranny sucessfully in use for YEARS of comparable abuse. I see lots of guys initially happy with tranny builds because they shift hard or the like, and a few months or a year later are looking to build another.

We have a local guy (who built my 700R4) who is really good, so I'm fortunate. He's built countless trannies for my friend, all have lasted a very long time. Even built a 200R4 for a guy running a low 10s high 9s Grand National.

Actual good, experienced builders are hard to find it seems. Due to not only the internet, but the availability of info to rebuild a trans is pretty abundant, so almost anyone with at least a fair knowledge of vehicles (say, a mechanic) could do it. Do it well, maybe, but do it good so it'll last long enough, probably not. We also have a really good TCI shop here with veteran builders. Both TCI and the other guy are really close too. After we move to Tn, if I need a trans built, I might just make a trip up here for the rebuild just because I know they're good.
As mention, just make sure you do some hard core research, as if you were in school studying for a final exam Senior year but there was only getting an A or F. When it comes to transmission rebuilds, don't settle for B-D

Well I can tell you this since I dynoed before and after a swap from a T56 to a TH400 with a 4000 stall...
It will cost you about 50RWHP from a stick to a stalled auto like a TH400... Th350 would probably be less like 35-40....
but the car was WAAAAY faster at the track... Keep in mind that RWHP #'s are not everything.... you car's motor is still making the same amount of power.... and the tranny is making better usage of it....hence the faster track times.....
