Default Broken starter nose?

Hey guys, I decided its time to give my 94Z some much needed TLC. The car has been sitting for a couple years outside, so obviously not in the best condition. I start it up, let it idle while i wash it. The car stalls out so i go to try it again only to realize gas is on "E". Tried starting it a couple times then i get this LOUD noise, so i decide no more trys. Took the starter out to realize the nose broke off the dam thing. The engine spins freely i.e. nothing is frozen. Any ideas what caused this before i break another one. TIA

Is it an auto or stick? Is it the original starter in there, over time fatigue can weaken the nose and crack.

just try putting a new starter in and see what happens. you need a new starter anyway... besides, if it breaks again, the new one should be under warranty.

The car is an auto. The guy at the parts place is telling me that the starter needs to be shimmed or the nose will crack again. Is this true and if so how do i go about shimming it?

Hey, I replied to your post over at the z28 site. I was having a problem with mine and some people said to shim it but I could never get a good answer on how to, so I just replaced it and works great. I think by shimming it you use different washers to get the angle of the teeth matched up. I could be wrong but like I said I didn't need to shim mine I just put on a new one and no problems....Hope this helps.

So what happened with the new starter? Did you have to shim it?
