Default Balancing.

From what I understand, the lt1 (95 model) is internally balanced. I am in the process of doing a budget rebuild and I plan on balancing the rotating assembly. A couple of the shops i spoke to just need the rotating assembly, where as one says they also require the hub/pulley and clutch/flywheel. I have also heard that the hub and flywheel are neutral balanced, if thats the case then i don't see how that would effect the balance of everything else. Also keep in mind i am doing a 6 speed swap as well (if that has any effect on it).

What have you guys done with your builds?

The hub is supposed to be neutral balanced, but bringing in the flywheel would be a good idea. In all honesty, I'd bring it all to them, just so we know everything is working in harmony.

The LT-1 crank hub doesn't have a keyway in it from the factory, even though the crank has provisions for keys. Having one broached in it (the hub) might be a good idea.

the LT1 is externally balanced. the damper is TYPICALLY, but not always, neutrally balanced. the flywheel is not. i have heard of ppl having stock cranks internally balanced though so since you're getting your engine rebuilt i would look into having that done. it simplifies things, alot.

Its your motor, the machine shop will typically balance it however you like. Some people jsut prefer internally balanced motors while others think its easier to keep stock style balancing. My motor maintains stock style balancing.

You have a few choices.

To clarify, the motor is externally balanced, but only at the rear.
The harmonic balancer is neutral balanced.

You can either have the crank made for this configuration or you can go with a true internally balanced motor. This requires the stock flywheel to have the counterweight removed & the flywheel rebalanced, or better yet buy a zero balance flywheel for the 1pc. seal crank for the best method.

1. stock LT 1 is externally balanced. the hub is neutral balance and the flexplate or flywheel is "weighted" (aka external balance

2. if you do get your rotating assembly "internal balanced", you will need to get a "neutral" balance flexplate or in your case flywheel. You can have a stock flywheel zero balanced for about $40 or buy a neutral balanced one
