Default Locking Plate behind the steering wheel... do I need it?

Ok I am taking my steering wheel off to replace the plastic housing and turn signal switch (The level). I am finishing up shortly here but this locking plate do I need it?

I assume its to keep others from stealing my car or make it harder right?

Honestly I am going to be putting on an aftermarket wheel so I am not that interested in it.

What is its purpose? I already removed the airbag center as I will not be using that obviously .

Yes, you need it. It preloads the bearing for the upper steering shaft and it also locks the wheel when the key is returned to the off position and removed from the lock, hence the name "lock plate".

Hmm... wonder why mine does not lock then... Ok I will put it back on I was looking and noticed that yes it has to be on.

I do have another column question... it seems there is a plate behind the signal lever/wiper lever... I do not have it. Seems my bright control will just pop off until thats on... but would that effect the steering wheel from locking?

There is a lock pin that protrudes from the column bowl. If you are looking at the lock plate, when installed, and turn the key switch to the off position, you should see that pin start to come out of a hole in about the 12 o'clock position. If it does not, or there is no pin in that hole then either the spring that moves the pin is missing or the entire assembly is missing. If you contact your local dealer and have them print out a parts breakdown of your column, then you should be able to identify your missing components for your high beam switch. You can also look in a factory GM service manual.
