Default Motor Mounts

I'm just wondering about how hard its going to be and how long its going to take to put new motor mounts in. I think my steering linkage is rubbing my headers so it HAS to be done. Sucks but it does. So if anyone has any suggestions please fill me in. Also if you have a favorite brand that would also be great! Thanks...

Quite a job!!! I did mine while I had the motor jacked up chaning the oilpan gasket. There are two methods and you will get a ton of feedback on both, but the way I did it was use a block of wood and a bottle jack to jack up the motor from the balancer/crank and removed the motor mount bolts and then the mounts from the motor. The other method uses a cherrypicker to lift the motor from the top. Once you have it up remove the mounts and then drill ou the clam shells to remove the inserts and install the new ones and I would go with Energy Susp or Prothane as they will be stiffer and provide more support. Once you get them back together, mount them back up to the motor/block and I found it easier to line up the pass side and install the mount bolt and leave the driverside loose from the block to give you some wiggle room to install the mount bolt as it will be a PITA!!! Use some greese on the mount bolts to help them slide thru the mounts and a hammer to tap them thru. Once you get it in tighten up the mounts to the block and you're done. Good luck and let me know if you have any questions.

About 3-4 hours depending on how many issues you run into. If you have LT headers then you might have problems reaching the motor mounts and the bolts that hold them to the block. Like I said it's quite a job, but easily done in a day.

Damn! It really sucks, because i just had the transmission out for a rebuild and im SURE it would have been about 100x easier when it was missing headers and the transmission. WHAT TIMING! lol

Of course, without the tranny to support the rear of the engine, you would definitely then have to use the cherry picker method.....

In reality, it's not all that big a deal, I've done it, but don't have headers on my car.

I've written this up a couple of times - try a search, since this is
an often-talked-about subject. A couple of hours times should do it.

if you replace the motor mounts with poly make sure you switch the tranny mount to poly too

This sucked. Lots of time lining things up and drilling out the old mounts, but if it needs to be done do it.
Also don't forget that you can take a floor jack and put it underneath the transmission with a phone book on it (if it's a manual).

Are u nuts!!! Solid MM's on a DD car? Polys are stiffer yes, but solid mounts will beat you to death on a car that is daily driven. Just my 2 cents as it would be good to upgrade to Poly mounts yes but at least stick with new OEM rubber ones at least.

FYI - Prothane are pretty much the same as Energy susp. Here is the link for the ones on Jegs:
http://www.jegs.com/i/Prothane/311/7-508/10002/-1
also as stated make sure to get the tranny mount too:
http://www.jegs.com/i/Prothane/311/7-1909-BL/10002/-1
this is the combo set as it will save you a few $

deffinitely DO NOT get the energy suspension JUNK. get prothane from jegs. I had mine all apart and had the new ES mounts in the clamshells and they would wobble inside the clamshell and were very loose, i said screw that took them back and bought Prothane which fit very tightly and were an overall better mount. maybe I just got bad ES ones? not worth the hassle.. prothane dumdumdum

.... no? you have it backwards my friend, having poly engine/rubber trans is okay. having poly trans/rubber engine puts more stress on the trans tailshaft b/c the engine wants to twist more than the trans. but having the engine poly and trans rubber is fine. ( I'm assuming this is what you were thinking)

Damn I did every thing wrong. I supported the engine and dropped the K-frame. Then put in the poly eng mounts and kept my Stock modified LS1 trans mount.

Good thing I only plan on running 9s. Was good for 10.0s so I hope they will hold up!

you're right. makes sense to me anyway. ive heard a poly trans/rubber engine mount can also cause your bellhousing to shift which could probably cause problems too
