Default What cam is in my car?

My 95 z has an aftermarket cam that was installed by the previous owner but I do not know what cam is in the car. I have no way of contacting the previous owner since it has been a while since the car was purchased. The engine revs high (about 6600 rpms) and the idle is relatively smooth so it is definitely a smaller cam. Any guesses as to what it might be? Crane 227, cc305, etc. Also, is there any relatively simple way to find out? The car is an A4 with 2.73 gears on a stock shortblock with a stock stall. Thanks for the help.

unfortunatley there is no possibly way to find out, other that pulling the cam and looking at the grind numbers on it.

If it is important to you could try measuring valve lift. NOT easy or very accurate, but could give you an idea what is in there. Does it have a tune in it? Might be able to find out from the tune.

If I really wanted to know I would measure the lift off the cam lobe and at the same time I would be using a degree wheel to see when the valve events take place.

On an engine stand it could be done with the engine in the car...

He will be lucky to accurately measure the lift near (+- .015") the actual.. That variance won't be close enough to determine the cam.

So bottom line there isn't anyway to determine the cam...

I hear they pull to 7300 RPM's and make gobs of power! Something like 427.342 RWHP in a bolt on LT1.

My buddy put down 327 in a bolt on car and held the bolt on LT1 record for a few months. There are plenty others who put down good numbers too. Maybe you should do some reading in here.

Ok so you said stock heads and cam which his car was. i don't see a problem here? I took it as you referring to making changes to the heads and cam. As for the 503 being in his car I highly doubt it because if you knew about cams and overlap you would know that a 503 chops pretty hard. Not smooth at all as the OP said his does.

Although i still don't know why he says it pulls to 6600? A small cam would not pull that high. Did you get it on a dyno to see where the cam peaks at or did you just see where the rev limiter was set to? But as they said there is no way to know unless you get a grind number off the cam itself.

Does it pull to 6600 via the factory tach? If so, were talking like 6200-6300ish in real time. Maybe post a video of the idle, I would be able to get you pretty dead on to what it could be. However it could be custom so we cant determine the exact cam but could probaly get you in on a couple.

Thanks for the replies. I'll try to post a video on here in the next day or two so guessing games can continue.

My guess - it doesn't have a cam - it's a conspiracy.

As mentioned, you need to either put it on a cam doctor, cross reference a grind number on the cam, or get the cam card from the guy who installed it.
