Default lt1 starter issues

I ran into a problem this weekend when changing the starter in my 94 lt1. It's a remanufactured from autozone. I installed it making sure all the wires were connected properly just like anyother time. but when i go to start it the starter would hit the flywheel but wouldn't spin then all the electricals would cut off like the battery was dead. so i thought it was the battery obviously. so i go to jump it and the positive cable had melted the lead in the positive terminal. so i'm a little lost in why this could happen or what would cause this.

i've change starters before and never had problems, i've built cars and and motars and done just fine. why are you on this board if you're gona put people down for having question on their vehicles. i admit i don't know everything and i just work on cars as a hobby not a profession you DICK. i know the problem i'm having with my starter may be an easy fix but for some reason i'm lost and just came to this board to seek some help. not everyone and know all there is to know about a vehicle like you. I've read some of your post and from what i see you are the ignorant little $HIT who most likely learned all you know from reading post on this forum and now feels the need to be an *** hole.

were there any shims that came with the starter?

should be a straight forward swap. return the starter for a new one, maybe the unit was bad out of the box...

fwiw i run the autozone 'corvette' starter with no issues

but what would cause the cable to get so hot to melt the terminal.

note: the terminal melted when i tried starting the car without trying to jump it.

Did you hook the small wire to the wrong terminal? Sometimes people get them backwards and this happens. Check it again. Good luck.

i had a bad ground at the starter 1 time. it heated the + wire to the point of melting the plastic off of it. the factory wire could even be broken, on the outside it might look fine but a different story on the inside.

I got an autozone starter recently (~6 months) From what I remember of installing it (which was hilarious as my exhaust was rusty and I couldn't drop the Y pipe to fit it up, so i had to toss it over the front axle), I didn't use any shims, I literally put it up, bolted it and reconnected all the wires...sounds like if that terminal is melting it's shorting out, I'd do the above and re-check the wiring, all else fails bring it back and get another one to rule out a bad, defective starter. Just my .02

IF it checks out fine, ohm the wires and see if there is alot of resistance on them.

If it a BIG fat one, or a small petite starter? The LTx uses that small one and doesn't require shimming, but that ole fatty uses shims from time to time, so if you got that, it could be the whole issue.

I would hook up the wires first and "start" it while it's not bolted up. Mind you, I'd have someone else start it since the torque from it could twist up the wires and cause problems, as well as make it jump and touch something metal.

It sounds like you may have hooked up the small wire on the wrong terminal or it is touching the positive cable. Other than that I really have no idea. I just had to replace mine, my battery was low and when I was trying to crank my motor over the solenoid started clicking and my motor kicked back and busted off the part of the starter that sits inside the bellhousing. I have an autozone starter and so does my brother, we both haven't had any problems with their starters. And to the guy with the stock y-pipe...get a set of long tubes and the starter woes will be gone, but they make pretty much everything a big PITA haha

Good luck with the problem

ok, so i know there are no wires touching all the grounds are good and i put the starter and battery in. now what happens is i turn the in the on postion and all the lights come on, i go to crank it and the starter clicks and everthing shuts off. this time the terminal didn't get hot. i cleaned all the battery terminals and still the same. is it posible that i have a bad battery cable?

Loose ground. Happened to me before. Check that they are all connected and tight.

i checked all my grounds again and cleaned them all, i also cleaned my connections on the positive cable. i went to start it and the motor turned over but cracked the starter and broke a tooth off the flywheel. i'm lost on why this is happening.

I would say hydro or vacuum locked motor. Take out all your spark plugs and try to turn it over. One missing tooth shouldn't cause any problems with a new starter on it.
