Default Third O2 to measure AFR?

Would an O2 sensor after the Y give an accurate reading of AFR? I ask because my friend has an AFR gauge, and I'm sure I can find some O2 sensor for fairly cheap that outputs that signal. I figure if a third O2 after the Y would give me an accurate reading, it would help me with tuning my car better. Instead of having to buy an ALDL cable for $65-80 :\

So you believe you can get accurate readings of O2 for <$80? Please explain the parts you will use and I need to hear about the human interface. I am picturing you going WOT, watching the RPM and writing down the values for each RPM range.

Sounds like you thoroughly researched this solution?

To be useful for tuning you will need many 'accurate' readings. Things like RPM, IAT, Engine Temp, Map, etc...

So IF this guage were to provide an accurate measurment of AFR that data would need to be collected with the other engine data parameters to be useful for engine tuning.

The usual AFR gauges that utilize stock type O2s are useless light shows.

Ah alright, thanks

Battle, my scanner gives live readings for all those things you mentioned. And it's not hard to either have a friend drive while I look at it, or I drive while he looks at it.

a wideband 02 sensor is as cheap as a narrowband 02. I believe most bosch wideband 02s are like $50-60 each. However the additional hardware and software needed to read that wideband is where the additional cost comes from

I thought there was a link on here to a fairly cheap wideband AFR setup for like $150 or so? I can't remember the name of it though. I mainly use rpm in the wideband kit my friend has. I datalog at the same time for the MAP and other values.

For Wideband do you run just a single one down stream or one on each bank in place of O2s?

I've been told as long as the tune is fairly close (in terms of both sides having the BLMS nearest to each other as possible, and it running good) that only one was needed and it didn't matter if it was downstream of both banks, or just on one bank's side.
