Default overheating issue.

Well I was out a litle bit ago, when out of nowhere my temp is up at the beginning of the red. Then a minute later it dropped like a rock back between 180-210. From there I went straight home with the heater full blast and it pulled the same BS a second time. It was climbing fast, then about the time I was going to pull into a parking lot and call for a tow it drops like a rock again. What would cause this? I was thinking it was most likely a stuck thermostat but a friend of mine was saying it could be the head gasket.

It was the stat. I changed it out for an old one I had that was still working when I pulled it. Works fine now. Thanks for the reply

I'm having this same problem. Are you saying that you replaced a "new" t-stat with the old one that it was supposed to replace and it fixed the problem?

Yeah, the old one still worked when I took it out so I just threw it back in. Problem solved. I have a brand new one in the hatch that I picked up in case the same thing happens again. The "new" one was about 9 months old and just decided to **** itself.
