Comp Cams 503 in 383
Comp Cams 503 in 383 Is anyone currently running this cam in their 383? My stock shortblock bit the dust here recently. But I plan on using the existing cam heads etc but wondered how well the Cam would do on a 383 setup.
i would also say the 503 is too small...its quite a bit smaller than the cc306/gm847 cams. 224/230, 112 LSA, i believe lift is around .546 with 1.6's..not sure on the lift #'s though. Then again ive seen a few 383 setups that used hotcams(not sure why.). I would at least go with something in the mid 230 range, possibly a custom cam, or nice sized shelf cam (AI, LE, BRE, etc)
It would have amazing drivability in a 383. You would only have to rev it to like 6100 to get the most out of it. It is small for a 383 but would be great for DDing and would have tons of torque if thats what your looking for.

if you want great driveability get a custom cam...they will be able to make something that will suit your needs perfectly. if you don't want to go that route, id say at least get the comp 230/236

383's aren't 4 bolt by default. They are if you used a 4 bolt block to begin with. For example, I'm using my F-Body 4.000 Bore 2 Bolt Main black in my 383 build right now...
Corvette block is what you are using since they came with a 4 bolt main...

i belive iam going to go with the cc306 for my 383 build....like said before u wont have to rev it as high to get the most out of it in a 383....and it will have a good power range as well....just my 2 cents
infinite and a few others are dead-on..custom all the way to your specific build, cost is about the same and you'll get the DD WITH the added bonus of being fine tuned for your specific car. Allan Futral would be a good person to get in touch with for your grind. And 4-bolt 383's are built as such, not an automatic thing, although recommended.
I ran a CC503 in a 355 I had a few years back. It was fine in that motor and sounded great, but would be really small in a stroker.
I ran a CC306 in my 385 and it worked very well. 432/468 to the wheels through a 4L60E and a 12 bolt.
However, for my 396 I have gone with a custom Comp Cam that is bigger, much bigger, than a CC306.
