Default ok i know its been beaten to death

and its stickied, but i just wanna make this clear. if u have a stock bottom end, the best cam choice (of the shelf) would be the 503??? all i want to know, is will the 503 out perform the 847. with full exhaust tune, gears. just becasue the 847 is bigger, doesnt mean it will outperform right??

The 503 would be better for the usable power band the stock bottom end with stock heads would have or even ported heads and stock bottom end. In other words you dont want to twist the stock bottom end past 6400 or 6500 rpms and this is where the 503 drops off at! Where the 847 makes most of its power past this rpm range and you wouldnt want to twist the stock bottom end past that to get the power! The 847 would be a good cam for a built bottom end car that could twist on up to 6800 or 7000 rpms!

The GM847 will make more hp than the cc503 will. The thing is you want the most usable power which many people over look when choosing camshafts. The cc503 will give you more usable power if your limiting yourself to say <6400rpm. If you get the 847 and shift it at say 6600 the car will be faster. Major issue there is the stock short block which does not like going past or much past 6300ish at all. For a stock shortblock the cc503 is a better choice and it will have better drivability which is important to many.

Also the cc503 may not be the best choice, depends on what your looking for, something smaller might be better just depends on what you want but in terms of the best power output and performance the cc503 is about your best bet for a car with the stock block/heads before going custom which I always try to recommend. The beauty of custom is getting a cam that makes the power of the cc306/GM847 but rpm and duration wise is in the cc503 territory like the cam I have.

The 847 peaks power at 5800 with stock heads.

Thats funny because tbird's cc503 that he dynoed yesterday peaked at 5800 and my old cc503 peaked just past 5900 and were talking 224/230 versus 234/242 at .050". I've never seen a dyno graph that had a GM847 peaking before 6000 except for once not too long ago where it peaked at 5800 and it puzzles me. Stock heads do choke the GM847 I will admit but I've always seen that cam peak at 6000-6100 or so with stock heads from my experience.

To the OP: a thread by the tuner MadWolf that may be a little helpful if you sort through it.

Dont worry, I would think every post on this site has been beaten to death. Short answer? If your looking for MOST HP and dont mind revving it (AND plan to have some heads on there in the future to let that thing breathe) then pickup the 847. If your happy with just a cam and want the most out of your stock heads then grab that 503.

As described before, the 847 is choked off by the stockers ALOT, so dont get it unless you plan on going with some heads/intake or you will never see its full potential. Although many here have prooven, its one hell of a cam even on stock heads.
