Vortec (or Vortech, whatever spelling) makes great superchargers, are you looking at one?

Vortech makes quality stuff. Factory like finish. I'm running a T-Trim on my SS and have had zero problems with it. Whistles nice and loud too.

do yourself a favor and pull the motor and rebuild it for boost

high compression, hyperutectic pistons, stock rotating assembly unfortunately doesn't = longevity for most

there are some guys here that have been able to make a stock lt1 live on boost for a long time but i would probably say the majority have had problems

As long as your motor isn't an extremely high mileage motor, and it has been taken extremely good care of, you should be fine to run it on the lowest boost setting. I would get a compression test done before you do anything.
