Question Manual cooling fan mod

I can't find any threads or how-to's to make your fans come on manually, I found it before and know it's out there. Can anyone help me out?

Can't you just turn your A/C on?

I've got a leak in my A/C and don't want to run it. I turned my A/C on and my fans do come on, I just want to be able to run them when ever I want to. I guess I might just go with the SLP kit cuz it's plug and play.

I did the shbox.com method, works like a charm. Flick it down, both fans low speed, flick it up, both fans high speed. Took about 40 minutes, 2 pieces of wire, and a double pole/double throw switch from Radio Shack, IIRC less than $10 for everything.

(edit: just realised the link above is for OBD11, mine is OBD1, but basically the same setup/wiring)

Don't buy the kit unless you just like spending more money than you have to. Shoebox link is all you need, and as Sara Lou has stated, it is a double pole double throw switch.

^I used those to splice into the wires, no extra relays or anything, its worked great this way for 4 years.
If you aren't going to use LEDs, ignore the whole right side of the diagram, the lights are completely un-needed.

Low fan will keep it around 170-180 while hanging out in the staging lanes in around 85 degrees outside heat. If you bump the high fans on its overkill. When I was out in CA and it was 115ish, I would run the high fans in town, would keep it around 180.

Sounds good, the other day it was 94 here in Hawaii and my car was running around 220 or so, kinda hotter than normal. Did you keep the stock thermostat or opt for a lower temp one?

I'm running a 170 Be Cool thermostat. Do not run a Hypertech thermostat if you decide to go aftermarket. I had one fail closed, and then wrecked a head gasket.

Did the mod with just the switch and it works really good. Thanks guys, car now runs around 190 on low speed and 160 on high. Highly recommend this mod to anyone living where it is hot or have ground effects or sitting on the ground!!
