Default Car Stumbling Question

Ok so I am driving around town this past week and on the interstate I notice that if I am doing around 55-60 (gotta love heavy traffic) and then apply very slight throttle (enough to slowly speed up say 10mph over 25 seconds) the car feels like it is stumbling 2 times before I get to 70. Now if I am going slower or faster than that speed range and I apply the same throttle the car doesn't stutter. Alternatively, If I get on it it doesn't stutter at all.

Any ideas as to what would cause this?

Also after the engine is warm (been driven 15 miles or so) very occasionally I will stop at a red light and the engine will do the stutter thing as well (feels like a sudden drop of about 200 rpm--doesn't drop low enough to feel like it is going to stall but noticeable "bump").

Is this related or something different? Any help would be appreciated.

So I am thinking maybe its a fuel related problem otherwise I would be throwing some sort of Misfire or Opti code. This weekend I am going to sea foam the car and see if that works, if not I might try a new fuel filter since it has been a while since thats been changed.

Any other ideas?

Sounds like O2s, but check the cheap stuff first (plugs/wires/coil/ICM ect...)

An opti thats taking a crap can also do the same thing, but check the other stuff first.

Wouldn't the O2s trigger my SES light to come on? Thanks for the input. The plugs and wires were going to be my next step if the sea foam / fuel filter didn't clear it up. From there Ill see about the O2s.

OK so I sea foamed the car (1 can in tank and half a can into vaccum line) and I am pretty sure it fixed the problem. Lots of blue smoke came out and now the car runs significantly better than before. Smooth idle a good bit more power (breaks tires loose shifting into second now) and much quicker throttle response. Guess everything was just getting gunked up in there...then again 12 years old and 97k miles will do that.

Cool, and sorry I dident see your question before....

But O2 sensors dont cause SES lights all the time, sometimes they run crappy for awhile without actually triggering the light....

Ok so apparently the sea foam didn't fix the problem only made it less noticeable. So the problem is back just its not as noticeable now and is only around the 1800rpm mark +or - 100. I just replaced my fuel filter and although the car runs much better now it is still stumbling slightly. I bought some new wires and some tr55gps and plan on installing these in the next couple of weeks. Is there anything else I should try while I have the car on a lift? Or do the plugs and wires first and see if that fixes it?

If this doesn't fix it what should be the next things I check...ICM / o2s?

I think I finally fixed the problem. I fixed two things at the same time so I am not sure which was actually the problem. I changed the plugs and wires and also found a small vacuum leak around the PCV and fixed that as well.

Don't know whether the stumble was from the plugs / wires (these were still the stock for both) or whether it was the vacuum leak causing it. Have driven about 200 miles since fixing both and so far no more stumble. Hopefully this is fixed for good. Car is running significantly stronger having fixed both of these... surprising what a little tune up can do.
