quick question for you guys

hey guys, i have a 97 formula and have stock 2.73 gears (automatic). A friend of a friend has the 3.42s from a 6 speed and will sell them for $100. I wanted to get 3.73 but cheapest i found was for $200, but i plan on doing a mild nitrous setup in the future and thought that maybe the longer gears would be better. Any thoughts or insight please? thanks!! -Donovan

You would need a three series carrier for your friends gears. You have a two series, not gonna work. Well at least not without some extra cash.

I didnt think they put 2:73's in the later years, I thought it was the 3:23.

ok, let me see if i get this straight. The 3.42 out of my friends car wont work, because he has a 3 series carrier that came stock (3.23 is most for a 2 series for standard size). It is my understanding that they make "thick gears" that would fit my 2 series carrier, and would ultimately be a better dead because i could get the 3.73 for roughly the same price as his used gears and a 3 series carrier. is that about right?? thanks! -Donovan

A buddy of mine had a 2000 Z28 with 2.73s. Had a speed limiter at 115 (If I remember right) and didn't come from the factory with Z-rated tires. I think it had 235/55R16s on it.

in addition to what i asked in my last reply, is it typically better to have longer gears with nitrous or is it always better to have shorter gearing??
