Default Emissions Free

I have a 1997 SS and I want to remove all the emissions from it. Is this possible? Hard? Any walkthroughs? Thanks!

Possible, definitely. Hard, depends. Walk throughs, yes and no.

Explanations: You can remove emissions from pretty much everything. As far as it being hard, this is how things get tricky. The removal of hard parts is easy as hell, but the removal of software is a different story. It can EASILY be done if you want to have a tuner do it, or if you have the stuff to tune your own. You can technically do it w/o having it tuned as well, you just unplug all the vacuum lines and cap off the solenoid (leave that plugged in), and for the AIR pump you just unplug it and remove all it's hoses. As far as a walk through, I'm sure there is for the hard stuff, but not for the tuning. If you do the latter method of just capping **** off, there really is no walk through needed unless you have no knowledge of how engines/cars work If that's the case, just say so, and people will chime in with answers to your questions.

www.shbox.com should have all the info you need to remove the vacuum lines and AIR stuff I mentioned.

If you want to actually remove the hard parts, such as the valve and steel tubing, you'll need an EGR Block off plate set, usually had for around $15. eBay has a bunch, as well as sponsors.

Awesome! I had a 1993 Z28, but never got any deeper into it other than a chip, 160 stat and catback. The wiring in the car was real buggy and I could never keep it running. So now I'm playing with the newer SS and so far its been a lot better car.

More than likely with your 1997 you will throw a code or two since it's an OBDII car.

I tuned out all I could with my AIR and EGR, but even when I unplug the EGR solenoid, it pops a code IMMEDIATELY. If I leave it plugged in, but capped off, then all is gravy.

I say give it a try, if it pops codes, then you know it has to be tuned out

I bought some plugs for the AIR system. Exactly what do I need to remove to install these plugs?

well since your getting headers that don't have the AIR provissions you don't need the plugs, they go into the manifolds or headers with AIR tubes installed...

I have and OBD-I computer, and I pulled all the stuff long ago and just got around to pulling the wires from the computer last week, hell If you don't have to deal with emissions testing then pull it, it makes it much easier to work on the car with all that misc stuff ripped out...
