Default Hissing noise question

I am brand new to the M6 and manuals all together. I just picked up a 99' c5 coupe 6 speed and love the thing! 6 speed is the way to go for sure, car is a blast! Anyways, when i go to slow down and push the clutch in, if i toss it in first coming up to a stop sign with clutch in, i hear a hissing noise, does it if i do it in 2nd as well just not as loud. Just curious what that is? Thanks!

Typically its the syncros doing that from being "over loaded" with force . If you are trying to put the unit into a much lower gear going too fast , this will occur .

The internals are still moving when the car's moving, the clutch just disconnects the motor and trans. IIRC, the C5 T56s didn't get carbon fibre synchros until 2001, so you may just be hearing the first signs of wear. It may not hurt to try a fresh fill of non-synthetic DexIII, just to be sure.
