IMO, if it is lighter then its not by much. T56's aren't that light like the old T5's were. I dont kno the exact weight of either but I've lifted both and both were pretty heavy.

what r the major differences between the new T56's and the old? are they considerably lighter than the new? what would it take to mount an old T56 to an LS1?

T5's were the older ons. T5's were light but weak! I would never think of putting one behind an LS1(not sure if you can anyways). T5's were only put behind 305's in the third gens. They started putting T56's in our cars in 94. 98+ T56's had a different bellhousing and IIRC they had a different input shaft as well than the 94-97 T56's

A T56 with bellhousing comes in around 140 lbs . I have no idea what the 4L60E weighs but would guess its heavier .

My 700R4 was something that was quite difficult to move around on my own, let alone lift consistently. I don't think the newer iterations of the 4L60 got any lighter. My T-56 was something I could pick up and lift onto a table with some effort, but quite doable without feeling like I pulled something in my back.
