Default T56 problems with 3-4 shift

Hi I recently bought a 98 6speed camaro with 86k miles and already having problem with the trans. Havent got to drive it alot about 300 miles since I've had it but just noticed a problem today. One of the problems is just crusing that it will pop out of 3 and it sometimes grinds going into 4. At WOT it will grind both 3 and 4. All the other gears work perfect and the guy I bought it from said the trans has about 4k miles on the rebuild with a SPEC clutch with the newer slave cylinder. I can tell its got a clutch in it but I have no proof that its been rebuilt. Also it has a short throw shifter. Thanks guys for the help.

Josh

This is a very common issue with the T56 . Upgrade the fork , replace the rings and replace the fork pads .

Thanks guys for the input. It most definitely needs a rebuild, i'm going to try to wait till after xmas. What sucks most of all is I just bought it and have only put 300 miles on it since I bought it. Guy I bought it from said it only has 4K miles on it since rebuild, if thats the case they must have somebody like me rebuilding them. I guess I got alot to learn about the 6speeds LS1's and thank you LS1 tech

I need to do my clutch soon and since my tranny will be out, can someone that had this done give me a price they paid? you can Pm if you like, i dont know if i can afford to have this done but i would rather not mess gears or grind them. Thanks!

You got part of that right, but NONE of the stuff from SSI is at my shop!! Joe does tuning for us and Scott Is one of my mechanics. He builds all of our 6speeds. I don't need people to start thinking that we merged again.

i just bought an 02 ws6. It grinds almost every time shifting into third gear and usually in 4th gear. I didint notice it at first when i bought the car but now its a problem. Is a rebuild necessary? im trying to make this as economical as possible so what could be possibly wrong?

the trouble you talk in the syncro got 3 key (cast metal) and with a lot of hand effort on the shiffter is finish to broke so for fix problem now they have some billet key. http://www.ddperformance.com/billetstruts1.jpg (the replacement billet key)
and other problem is the cast alum fork of the 3&4 not enough strong and twist http://www.ddperformance.com/stl34fork.jpg (the replacement steel fork)
so break the plastic fork pad
http://www.ddperformance.com/bs14b.jpg (the replacement bronze pad)
and after the fork in the syncro are loose.

it could be a key on the 3/4 shift fork, its plastic, but that wud result in getting stuck in gear. Your 3/4 syncro may be bad. I wud try a BG product call MSC, Multi- Gear -Concentrate. You can put in this additive for manual trannies. It may stop the grind in 3/4th. Get it at your local parts store. It stopped my 3/4 grind until I did my rebuild, much smoother too
