You are not doing anythign wrong. The skip shift light will come on when you are trying to shift between 1st & 2nd gears, while going fairly slow. The computer would like you to go from 1st to 3rd gear. Sometimes you might notice that the it is difficult to get into 2nd gear when this light comes on.
There are some plug in modules that will eliminate that skip shift.

Well to go into it a little more in depth, that "Skip Shift" feature was a rather ridiculous feature GM built into the the manual transmission (which I believe they still do on the newer models ??). Under certain conditions (35% throttle or less) the transmission is designed to force a 1-4 gear change to save fuel.
In reality this is ridiculous and unsafe in MANY situations when merging into traffic. To bypass it, just accelerate a little more briskly or the best thing to to is buy a inline harness from one of the many sponsors on here which plugs into the factory harness on the transmission that eliminates this annoyance. After doing so the light on the dash will still illuminate but can just be ignored and you'll have a much more enjoyable driving and shifting experience.
