Default conversion question

What did you guys use to drill the hole for clutch master? I looked through the writeup on top and it looks like alot of people just marked and cut it. Surely someone used one of this drill cutters that cuts a perfect hole right? I am asking because I am horrible with cutting and read that some people had problems with the firewall ripping after cutting.

Also where you cut the tunnel, did you guys just estimate? I looked at all the pictures and some used a tunnel from a manual and others just cut it, but all the cuts look different. Can anyone provide me with an exact measurement?

I am just worried about how I mount the master and screwing up the firewall. I lined up the clutch pedal and tried marking the wall, but I am still afraid I am going to screw up on it.

For the master, the pedals mount/locate off of the brake booster, then you can mark the hole location from the inside and drill out.

For the shifter, I wanted a tight fit, so I mounted the trans in place, and traced along the bottom of the tunnel around the shifter mount on the tailhousing. Then took the trans back out and cut upwards..

I located the master cylinder off of the pedals, then for the big hole where the master actually slides through, i used a hole saw. 1 3/4" i think..

Mount the pedals and mark where the hole will be with reference to the mounting plate that the U-bolt will go through. You will see a pattern in the plastic for the plate.

I used a 1-5/8" hole saw from Lowes (~$10). I didn't have any problems with the firewall nor the plastic in front of the firewall ripping.

For the shifter, I just estimated based on where I saw other people cutting the holes in the sticky. The easiest way to do this without estimating is to install the transmission and trace like 85MikeTPI said.

FWIW, when i did my conversion i used the write up that gm high tech did when they did an a4-m6 swap. Great write up, plus they give dimensions for the holes that need to be cut.

Can you please link to the write up. I found a tunnel from a manual car so I think I am just going to weld that in the auto's place.
