Default Pilot bearing puller...pic

Everyone is always asking about how to get the pilot bearing out, I just happend to find one in a town dump one time, and it has been by far the easiest way to do it. I used the slide hammers, and dremels in the past, but man does this thing work great, took all of 45 seconds to pull the bearing. It's an old snap on, but I have no Idea who would have thrown this gem away....

So, here is a pic of the easiest way thus far to remove that stubborn bearing.

Yea.......I've broke one of those
The shoulder on the one I used was too small and didn't "grip" the edge of the pilot bering enough to pull it out. (even after using a spacer to force the arms outward and grinding the arms to broaden the shoulder)
When in doubt........Drill it out!

Their is an even easier way than that. Autozone sells a bearing puller, with a variance of sizes. You can slide it into the hole, then you screw into it causing it to widen and latch onto the sides. Then it uses a sliding puller, and you just ram that back and out it comes.

I have used that one, I think it sucks personally, this one is the same when you tighten the handle and it spreads the fingers, then tighten the nut, and it pops out.

+1 on the Harbor Freight blind hole puller, but I think I only paid 40 for it.
Works like a dream. Just put some muscle in the sliding of the hammer.

If the pilot bearing is stuck the slide hammer types don't work. You need the real puller that BADD_SS posted.

Wet toilet paper method. Free and easy. Worked with a bushing, not sure about a bearing.

So very wrong. It will displace the oil seal behind the pilot bearing. Don't do that on an LSx.

I used a grease gun. Stick the nozzle in there and start to pump the grease will push the bearing out. simple way that I found to do it.

WOW soo many non LS1 people, sorry, you cant do that on an ls1 unless you want a major hassle. There is a plug in the back of the crank, if you push anything in there, it will push the plug in, and you will have a massive oil leak.

This was supposed to be a pic for LS1 t-56's, but it would work on any..

I removed the pilot bearing yesterday. I was worried cuz of all the difficulties I read about. I used an puller rented from autozone. I attached a 2-1/2 lb. dumbell weight to it (using a bolt from another puller I have for my harley and a large washer) since I have limited clearance behind the enginge stand. I tried to remove it (i.e., banging it out). Didn't budge, but I anticipated this so I used the following trick.... I bought a can of computer keyboard cleaning spray. Basically it is compressed air to blow-out dust from your computer's keyboard. I shook the can and held it upside down so VERY VERY VERY COLD air/liquid comes out and I sprayed it all around the pilot bearing. Then I tried banging out again as I mentioned above and it came our VERY VERY easily. The coldness from the liquid form of compressed air essentially froze the bearing and made the metal constrict, thus, making easier to pull out. I just wanted to share this with you all. Try it out next time, it should make the pilot bearing easier to pull out. I took picture of the tools I used. I'll try to upload later this week.
Good Luck!
