Default Switching transmission gears

I was thinking about changing out rear end gears first, as they are 4.56:1, but was wondering how many options I had for changing transmission gears instead. Really the only thing I want is better 6th gear MPG for highway use. As a disclaimer, I dont know anything about transmissions except that mine is an M6 in a 2000 Z28...so this very well may be a very dumb question that can't be done.

Basically is is possible for me to have a shop economically put in say, about a .35 or .30 gear for 6th instead of the .50 overdrive gear in there now? Something to get the cruising RPMs at 70-75mph back under 2000...thanks.

I see changing the rear gears to be a better option here..and definately cheaper.

yea I'm sure the rear gears would be cheaper, but I'd still like to keep the 4.56s for drag racing; I mean if this transmission gear could be done for less than $1000 then I'd do it. Then again, the savings in fuel of $1000 from having the job done would probably take 3 or 4 years to accumulate; soooo, it'll probably just stay the way it is...

Just thought I'd check to see if this idea was even feasible.

Unless you make some custom gear cutting, .5 is the lowest gear ratio currently made. In fact if you were to design a .3 driven gear, it would prolly have a smaller diameter that the mainshft you want to install it on. I don't believe you can do this without major redesign . In the end, you would severely weaken the box.
