Default t56 shift linkage issue

on this section of the trans i have a little rod that is sticking out that I am not sure what it is suppose to do. Any help is highly appriciated. car is sold So i have to get this back together

tricky part is aligning the shift forks before sliding the main case in place so that everything fit together right. this is where i am stuck

come to find out what i messed up on was the shifting fork rod there is a part that you have to remove so that it can slide out of the two shifting forks I had it upside down so it would not allow it to go into fourth gear. tranny works now!!!
