Spec 3+ before shim too low with shim too high
Alright im out working on the car now and the clutch was low without the shim. It would not want to push the clutch in all the way. Now with the shim in it wants the pedal too high and it will slip the clutch very badly. Im just wondering if I should get the adjustable master, mill the shim half way, or what. Thanks

The shim is used to maintain the OE geometry when using our shorter/stronger plate. I am assuming that you have bled the hydraulics. Am I correct? If not this would be my first suggestion. Did you replace the OE bearing with the one provided in the kit? Did you install a new Master Cylinder? Let me know and we can work from there. Thanks!

Unfortunally I have used this clutch for a while with no problems and then changed the engine. When replacing the engine I changed all the hydrolics and the slave came with a new bearing. I didnt know that its different. Im going to have to mill the shim down to half its size and hope for the best.

Talked to spec and some how my 408's crank is not stock length. Only explenation they could offer. Milled the shim from 0.120 to 0.050 and is much better but still slips on heavy load. I will take their advice and use gasket material and trace out a new thinner shim and try that next week.
PS the throw out bearing is a stock replacement. It is the same stack height.

I have talked to two poeple with this issue...the clutch kit measured out properly for both of them. That being said there has to be something else that is different. Since both had recently replaced the slave cylinder I am beginning to wonder if the difference isn't in the slave body length. The bearing could be the same but if the slave was a little longer it would affect the bearing location. I suggest checking the length of the bearing/slave when fitted together and fully compressed...I will bet that there is a difference.

Im going to make a shim out of gasket material like the tech I talked to a the phone from spec suggested. Im pretty sure it will work. With the fiber shim made at around 0.25 it will put me about in the middle of where it is now. Other than this shim BS I like the clutch very much. It drives good and seems to hold the power on motor. I will have some track time on it after a couple of weeks. I will post up how the fiber shim works out. Thanks.

Factory TO bearing= 1 7/8"
Spec TO bearing= 1 29/32"
So the difference is 1/32", which is small, but they are NOT the same height.
To make it more technical, or explain why....
Without the plastic spring retainer, the Spec TO bearing is only approx. 1/64" taller than factory. The seat of the Spec spring retainer is also about 1/64" taller than the factory plastic piece.
So this is where the 1/32" comes from with bothing bearings seated in the plastic spring retainer/perch.

Thats funny. Spec themselves told me on the phone the the bearings where the same. Nice.
I made the shim out of gasket material made out of 0.025 think. It worked and it sits where it needs to be. Problem solved.

Guys, the parts that we provide are like the parts that have been offered by GM for these cars in the past. That being said if the bearing you have from GM is different than the one we provide then that means that there has been a change from GM as our bearing are the same as they always have been.
GT, no one intentionally miss-informed you...if changes are made by GM that we haven't seen then we wouldn't know this. We get this bearing from the same manufacture that GM buys them from and have been for years.
Do any of you have a picture of the bearing you were provided by GM? Can you post a shot comparing the OE bearing to ours? I just want to see what is different so I can better understand. Thanks!

No worries at all...I understand! If anyone can provide a picture of the bearings though it would be great. I can order one from the dealer...but I would hate to get a bearing that is different than the one that you all are using. Thanks in advance!

I have a local customer that brought a new GM Slave/Bearing Assembly by and it has a black shim on the face that contacts the transmission. This shim is .050 taller than our shim and the compressed height of the bearing face is .025" taller. This means that the total difference in height of the bearing face is .075" taller than the stock slave and bearing (using our shim) that I have on the shelf. The part numbers are the same as are the casting numbers on the part. I will provide pics tomorrow morning with more info. I assure you I am working on this...as a side note, the bearing is the same on both of these.
