Lifespan of a Spec 3 clutch?
Hi all. I am getting my car fixed next week. It needs the pilot bearing replaced. This will involve dropping the transmission. Right now I have a Spec 3 clutch in there that I've had in there for over 4 years and about 30K miles. From what I've read on here you really can't expect them to last much longer than that. I'm wondering whether I should just go ahead and get a new clutch and have it installed while it's in the shop or not. I would hate to get the pilot bearing replaced and then a month down the line need a new clutch and have to pay the labor again.

I'd replace it. I have a McLeod Street Twin, and since my tranny is already out, I am going to send it in to be rebuilt. If the clutch looks like it has any wear, you might as well replace it while the tranny is out.

The best way to check for the need to replace a unit is to measure the disc thickness. With this unit being about three years old it should have had a starting disc thickness of .310" and the normal expected wear life of a stage 3 is between .020" and .025". That being said if your disc is thinner than .285" then you need a new one. I hope this info helps. Let me know if you have any further questions. Thanks,
