father in law just got a 98 covette. and its hard to shift into 2,4, and 6 gear. what would cause this? where could i get the parts? and how much should it cost if he takes it to someone to fix?

Since they are all the back gears, it's likely that the shifter linkage is worn/mis-adjusted. The Torque-tube/linkage of the '98 vette would increase the likelyhood.

Cost depends on your area, the shop rates, the shop quality, and how fast he needs it repaired.. That's not including any parts that might need replaced.
