Question RAM clutch question

When RAM talks about shimming the VDS clutch, are they talking about shimming the pressure plate cover away from the flywheel, or the pressure plate from the cover, or ???

When you shim the VDS your pushing the PP away from the Flywheel

By shimming between the flywheel and PP cover?

How do you compensate for wear by moving the PP away from the flywheel?

As the clutch wears, you remove shims. This compensates for the disc getting thinner and restores the clutch fingers and static load to the original settings. Also, by adding shims you can reduce the plate load pressure, which will allow the clutch to 'work' some on launch. We usually recommend installing the unit at max pressure (comes to you this way) unless you are strictly racing and trying to extract every ounce of performance possible. Beware that working the clutch like this will also cause it to wear faster, as you are 'slipping' it some on launch.

So, since it is set for max pressure with no shims from the factory, how do you remove shims to compensate for wear?

it comes from the factory w/ 3 shims already on each stud so your all ready to go. put in the clutch and then as it wears you can remove a shim to bring it right back

Pardon my ignorance, but I am still confused. Where are those shims installed? What stud? I didn't get any shims with the clutch/fw/disk package, and I can't see where they could be inside the PP cover.

Did you purchase the VDS system or just the individual components? The VDS flywheel has studs where the pressure plate bolts on, and the shims sit on these studs between the cover and flywheel.

Well, I _thought_ I was getting a VDS setup, but ended up with three boxes; 1550 FW, 402 PP, and 910 disk. So now I understand why I don't have shims. Since my "VDS" is not set up as a package, I probably don't want to use shims ...

BTW, what thickness are the shims?

You have the components not the VDS. Thus, just install them as is with a standard set of 3/8 pressure plate bolts and you will be fine!
