Question Rear Main Seal Leak

I just noticed a couple drops from that area..I cleaned it up and drove 20 miles ...5 hrs later there was a couple more.....what is invovled with changing the gasket.....Does the M6 Transmission have to be dropped entirely ??? [I imagine it does already, considering all the pics when I searched show tranny down and out.] Thanx.

Yes, you need to drop the transmission to change the rear main.

However, before you drop the trans, make sure the oil leak is not coming from your oil pressure sending unit. It is located behind the intake manifold on the rear of the engine. If it starts leaking, the oil will run down the rear of the block, possibly making it appear as if the rear main seal is leaking.

If it is in fact the rear main thats leaking (not very common on these cars), then you'll need to drop the transmission completely, remove the bellhousing, remove the clutch assembly, remove the flywheel, and then you can get to the rear cover.

The cover just has perimiter bolts holding it on. You just unbolt it, remove the gasket, install the new crank seal, put on the new gasket, and install and torque the bolts on the rear cover. Make sure you put 2 dabs of RTV (Ultra Black) on the corners of the cover where it meets the oil pan to prevent leaks when you reinstall the cover.
