5th gear grind
I have a 1999 Trans am with 116k on the clock. The car grinds into 5th gear occansionally, but doesn't do it all the time. I'm thinking it might be the syncro or possibly the sliding sleeve. I've never heard of a 5th gear failure. My car is putting down 400+whp and all the other syncros are holding up just fine. Anyone else have any suggestions?

Hey guys,
The 5th/6th gear is connected to the countershaft extension.
It's possible that maybe the blocker ring is worn a bit on 5th or the actual part of 5th gear that meshes with Synchronizer Assembly. The actual Synchronizer Assembly may also be worn too.
Here's a link for the T-56 manual.

Perhaps changing out the tranny fluid might help for the time being.
