Default T-5 questions

Is it a decent transmission? And will it bolt up to a sbc?

I put a Ford T5 behind my L98 SBC. I bought it off of ebay, had it rebuilt and had 2nd and 3rd shimmed very tight as that is where the weak point is. I've taken it to Laguna Seca and beat the **** out of it and it still shifts great and drives great. As long as you use the clutch, and know how to shift a T-5 will last forever. The T-5 sits behind a 355 with Trick Flow CnC ported heads, a ported tpi, and 10:1 compression. If that amount of torque doesnt break it I dont know what will. All torque no horsepower.

I would upgrade it tho. I would not just take it out ffrom behind a V6 and throw it behind a SBC.

I have one for sale if you need one.

T5's are not all the same. Different units have different gear ratios and different bolt patterns along with shifter locations. Which unit are you looking at?

The V8 T-5's are pretty stout little trannies, until you start speed shifting them. To much speed shifting and/or too much power will do it in, but for what it is, and how much a tranny cost, it is a strong tranny. Not in teh realm of the T56, but for teh dollar, tough to beat.

The add says it was out of a camaro, Ill try and find out which year. The asking price is 400, is that fair? And what would I need to do to put it into a 82 z28 with a sbc and a manual 4 speed?

What year Camaro? $400 seems a LITTLE high (I got rid of one I had for $100) Do you know the guy? Condition? Mileage? Etc..

thesource here on LS1 knows ALOT about the T5's and what they are worth, you might want to ask him what they go for normally.

If you plan on using a T5 behind a LS based engine in a 3rd gen F body, you really want to find a 1988-1992 V8 Camaro unit. Its the 2.95 ratio gear set and is a world class unit. I would not bother with anything other than that unit.

And finding that unit is getting harder btw.....

I wouldn't waste my time using a junkyard gm t-5 behind a SBC even.

My dad had one in his s-10 that probably made 350ish hp and we busted 4 in a little over a year. Finding the gm v8 ones is extremely hard because the VAST majority of fbodys were autos. And it only came behind 305s. Besides that my dad put a few in the grave himself.

One of them blew WELL after a gentle shift at like 5,500. Not fun.

If the sbc you've got is weak sauce then I might try it but I wouldn't even consider it if your making 300+ hp. Just my opinion.

You don't have to tell me. I only have two cores here at the shop while we have about 30 Ford cores. The good thing is, some of the parts Tremec discontinued have been picked up after market.

Are you interested in selling 1 or 2 of the ford cores? I use a Ford T5 behind my sbc, and can always use a spare or two.

No. We use them to build for customers. Until lately, the flow of cores was not enough to feed our demand but now things have slowed way down and now we are turning away people wanting to sell us Ford T5 cores.

I cant find the damn add anymore. I was just looking for a cheap temp fix until i can find a t-56. thanks guys

i went through 3 of them in my 91 formula before i swapped in a t-56 lol. i made about 450 ft lbs of torque though.
