Default Won't Let Me Shift Quickly

Here is my problem:When I really get on it and rev it high, the clutch does not start to disengege until almost to the floor. I think this is what is causing my very slow shifts. What I mean is, when I yank it out of gear it will hesitate before allowing the shifter to go into the next gear. It is progressivly worse from 1-2,2-3,3-4. This is killing my track times & speed.

I have pro 5.0, Cartek clutch disk, pressure plate, adj. master

I talked to Dave @ Cartek and he said to adj. pedal all the way up, make sure heat shield is in place under car between exhaust & line, Use brake fluid with higher boiling point.

I have the heat shield, pedal is adj. fluid may help, but it does it right away. (nothing had a chance to get hot)

My mech. talked to a local tranny guy that has been in the bis. for years and he said no stock pressure plate can handle this kind of power even with better springs. I'm not sure what Cartek does to the pressure plate, but it looks stock.

This guy said to call Ram, but my Cartek does hold up besides. Does anyone know what the answer is? Could it be the slave? I think I read that in another post.

ANY HELP IS GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I did all the work to this car at once and this is the last bug to be worked out!

THANX
MAULER

Hey, don't worry, you're not alone.

I too have a Cartek clutch & adj master assy, and I can't get it in to gear quickly either (and I also believe it's a negative impact on my dragstrip performance). I went so far as to replace my transmission with a freshly rebuilt spare with all the good stuff inside. Nope, that wasn't it.

I flushed the hydraulic fluid and put in Valvoline synthetic fluid. Nope, that wasn't it either.

So, I've got the McLeod adj master on the way, and if that doesn't work, I am pulling the Cartek and putting a RAM VDS 910 in, and pro-shifting the damn thing. I've got ~8k-9k on my Cartek, with numerous 6000+ dumps on the thing, it's never slipped or failed, but I just can't shift the trans fast.

I'm also a little worried that the Cartek isn't SFI rated. I've got a blanket, but I still worry about what a 7000 RPM dump could do to the clutch...

Another Cartek problem here...

I cant shift above 5500 cause the clutch just goes away and I completely trashed my 3rd and 4th. Ive done the drill mod, have the line covered with heat shielding and bled the hell out of it.

The clutch has held great with my 200 shot (700 RWTQ), but I just cant shift it in the high RPMs

Did you resurface your flywheel? I did. I'm wondering if that's part of the problem with the Cartek.

I also went ahead and ordered a Ram VDS today.

Did you guys do the drill mod? The stock line restricts flow and can definitely effect shifting....

I did. Drill mod (1/8"), synthetic hydraulic fluid (good pressure / well bled), master adjusted all the way up, and GM Synchromesh in the trans.

FLywheel is new SLP billet steel
No drill mod, but this is starting to seem like a common problem. I was told a stock pressure plate can't handle higher amounts of power.

Someone must know the answer to this.

I have the same problem with a ZO6 clutch and a Hurst shifter. It feels great when the car is stopped but a PITA to shift once it's moving.

Swapped out the Devron III for Pennzoil Synchromesh. Same sh*t. I'm gonna swap out the slave and see what that does. Otherwise they'll be a 98 Z28 sitting on the lot next to kingcuda's SS.

If its not in the hydraulics, it has to be something to do with the lever position of the clutch when bolted in place. We have never tested this pressure plate other than for static pressure, which is not bad. Centrifugal force could be acting on these levers in a funny way due to their position... My biggest concern with that plate is the fact that it is not ductile iron...

Swapped out the slave....same sh*t! So now I have a Z06 clutch with a kevlar disc, 2001 slave part #12565145, Pennzoil Synchromesh, a factory Hurst shifter and I've done the drill mod. I've gravity bled and Mity Vac'ed the heck out of this thing with no positive results. Now what ?!?

My car has the same problem that you guys are talking about, I really noticed it when ever i put my Pro 5.0 shifter on. During that time I had a z06 with the new slave and now it does the same thing with a spec III. Its one reason i don't go to the track often.

I also have the cartek set-up in my car and I don't powershift. I always let up just a little to make it go into gear. I really don't think it's the clutch thats the problem I tent to belive it's the tranny and that it can't take the high rev's

here is a video of me going down the track a few weeks ago

It's been confirmed by a tech that handles engines and transmissions at a local Pontiac dealer. It is the tranny! They all go between 50 and 100K according to him. It's not the syncros. It's the blocker rings that wear out. Looks like we're all getting new trannys now.

Well my fresh tranny still doesn't shift quickly. Brand new blocker rings.

Next idea?

I've got the RAM clutch here, but have a couple issues internally with my trans right now. Hope to be back up late this weekend.

I have the same problem with my McLeod clutch, McLeod's MC, and a new slave.
