so i pulled the shifter off of the tranny and with the shift rod and shifter set in neutral the bolt holes do not line up and when i line up the bolt holes the shifter leans back like its in 4th gear? I know i have a ls2 shifter on the tranny but do not know what this tranny came out of. I was told it was a ls2 tranny but im starting to think maybe its a ls1 t56 could that be my problem? I was thinking bout just buying a short throw for a LS1 and seeing if that fixes my problem

The shifters for the GTO have an offset that mounts them back far enough to fit the opening in the tunnel. A F-body style shifter will not work without some sort of offset handle adapter. As far as I know, the T56 trannys are the same between the LS1 and LS2, other than the gear ratios. Are you using the stock GTO shifter?

yes i am using the stock shifter off of my transmission. I have a cheap short throw on the way for a ls1 to see if that fixes the problem.

Did the rebuilt tranny come with the shifter offset lever (aka shifter cup) already installed in it? If so, you need to carefully drive out the roll pin and swap it with the offset lever from your GTO transmission. The Fbody and GTO use different levers.
