shifter rattles sometimes while driving
My shifter is rattling while I drive sometimes and I think it's because there is a little play in the stick even though it's in gear. What can I do to get rid of that noise or is it something I have to live with?

Do you have a stock shifter or an after market one? If its stock or after market sure that the base is tight to the trans and that the stick is tight to the base of the shifter. Also the plastic bushing that is the trans that holds the shifter can break or go bad. Upgrade to a new bronze one if you abuse your tans or slam it into gears with a stock shifter. If you have an after market one and it has limiting bolts make sure they are tight.

could that be where fluid is coming up through too? Had my shifter off and had some fluid that had sprayed up inside the rubber boot. Smells like tranny fluid after taking it in the higher rpms too

Off the shifter boot or the boot for the senter console? It is often that you will see it on the bottom of the console boot from the tunnel. That is caused when you have a bad seal in your tail housing of the trans or if you have a drive shaft that is not ballanced well. It causes the trans fluid to be flug on all the sides of the tunnel from the yoke of the drive shaft. Or it is caused by over filling. The t56 take about 2.6-2.8 quarts of ATF.
