Default Reverse pops out. Can i fix it?

I have a 1995 with 112,xxx miles and as far as i know it has the original t56. It likes to pop out of reverse and it is getting to the point where i no longer park in spots that i need to back out of. I'd like to get this fixed very soon because it's my DD. Can someone tell me what i should replace?

Here are the details:

If the shifter is NOT all the way in reverse it will make a light scratching sound when the clutch is engaged and the car won't move.

When the shifter is all the way in R i have to slowly engage the clutch until i hear a nice "clunk" from the tranny and then i know it's in R and i can back up.

It will pop out and grind especially when backing up hill.

It will still pop out if i hold the shifter.

The reverse lock-out and clutch seem to work fine.

I recently replaced the stock shifter for a Hurst Comp Plus.

So what parts should i replace? From what i've heard the reverse isn't too hard to fix because it's in the back of the transmission.

speaking from current experience. your Fu^^ed. mines been like that for over a year now. 04 gto. just recently though i found if before and right after u start it go through every gear and then to reverse. its worked twice for me. but i went through the shift pattern at least 5 times before it went in.

solution: rebuild or new tranny

well that's good news.

Is it possible to just replace the reverse gears without getting into rebuilding the whole trans? I really don't want to spend $900 on a rebuild.

My 99 was doing the same thing. Some people say there is a fuse for the reverse lockout that can blow and cause similar problems. I have never been able to locate it, Im in the process of rebuilding my t56 right now and i cant find anything wrong with reverse at all.

You can replace all the rev synchro/blocker/gear while in the car if you're patient enough. But if your 110K mile '95 has never been rebuilt, it may just be asking for a teardown and refresh.. Chances are if you do just reverse for $200-$300, that in a year or less some other 110K mile part will fail and you'll be doing it all again.

I agree that you should bite the bullet and have it rebuilt with that many miles on it. Pic below is your most likely culprit. The reverse has 1 blocker that is made out of bronze and if you don't slow down the trans before shifting into it, it can grind. Over time the engagement teeth wears to a point that it will pop out. You be the judge.

No because the engine has to be running so i can start to release the clutch for R to catch and "clunk" into gear.

Thanks for the good info guys. I'm probably going to order the reverse parts for now and put them in the car myself. I'm an automotive student and i will be taking a transmissions class next year and hopefully i can rebuild the whole trans in class then. Sometimes i get a scratch going into 3rd, so it probably could use a rebuild.

So far it sounds like all i need to do to fix R is remove the rear trans case, flip the synchro and replace the gear and blocker ring?? I've heard people say the R slider key gets worn, is that the same thing as the blocker ring?

I would pull the Tail Housing and replace the Gear if it's bad, I had the same problem and my Gear was fucked. When you are in there flip over the Slider Assembly..only one side of the Slider is used for Reverse, you don't need a new Slider. If you need a new Brass Synchro and Keys(if any are destroyed, highly doubt it though) I have some layin around.

Thanks for clearing that up for me. I've heard people call the parts several different names. I'm going to spend some quality time with my t56 service manual i just printed.

merv, how much do you want for your brass synchro and keys?

Help! I'm bringing this up again because i'm starting the repair and i need help pulling the tail housing. The trans is still in the car cause i'm trying to save time by not removing it. I've tried prying on the housing and hitting it with a block and hammer and it just won't budge.

Any ideas? Maybe i could use a puller on the output shaft?

The car is drivable, i just have to be real careful in reverse. But it'd be real nice to fix R now seeing how i have everything else apart.

It's got RTV in the seam..you are going to have to find the sweet spot that you can get a screwdriver into and break the seal..once you do that then it'll come apart. Make sure you re-RTV it when you are done.
