Need some help, should be a simple fix.... Ok, I know we have some 6-speed geniuses in here but I am no where near that. So here's my problem: I have a 2000 Trans Am WS6 M6. I noticed a while back, when I was driving the car daily, that when I did an oil change, and the car was jacked up in the front, a few drops of trans fluid was on the ground. It was apparent it was coming from the rear of the transmission but what exactly was causing this? Furthermore, I noticed that when you accelerate more than normal and especially at WOT you can smell tranny fluid burning pretty heavily. What seal exactly am I looking for here that is obviously defective. Any and all help is appreciated, Thanks.
seal on the rear ot the t56 is called a "rear seal" it seals off fluid from leaving the back of the transmission. if that is not it there is a bushing behind that, that could be causing the leak from it. have to tear it apart and see, hope it is just the seal. i hear the rear bushing is a true pita
Chances are its just the extension housing seal (output shaft seal). Its not difficult to replace. Just remove the driveshaft, pull out the old seal with a seal puller or similar device, push in the new seal, and tap it in evenly with a large socket or seal installer.
It could be the rear bushing, but its not likely for it to go bad unless you were running the trans very low on lubrication.

Verdad Gallardo If the seal is bad you will pretty easily be able to see where the fluid has been leaking out. It will be wet in the surrounding area as well from the driveshaft throwing fluid everywhere.
Does anyone know the right part number for this seal. I just puchased today part number 89059483 from the dealership for 50 and some change. Parts guy wasn't sure if the book was right or not and didn't know what a T56 exactly was... " ok t56 whatever, just tell me if it's an auto or manual!"

I read a few other threads that stated the aftermarket ones tend to leak shortly after install. Advising only to go with an OEM replacement. Let me know how yours works out. I'll swing by autozone. Mine won't be changed out for another two weeks.
